Writing a Book that Makes a Difference
Instructor: Jessica Page Morrell is
interested in all aspects of creativity and meaningful living. She
began teaching writers and aspiring artists in 1991, creating workshops
that are lively, focused, and filled with sensible insights. She is
author of Between the Lines; Writing Out the Storm; Voices from the
Streets; The Writer's I Ching; and, the upcoming Bullies, Bastards
& Bitches, the Bad Guys in Fiction. Morrell works as a writing
coach and developmental editor and hosts a web site:
www.writing-life.com. She has been writing a monthly column about
topics related to writing and creativity since 1998 and writes
articles, a monthly newsletter (The Writing Life), and a web log.

Description: This workshop
instructs writers on how to write a book that comes from our deepest
passions, and communicates emotions, caring, and concern. We will
discuss how our books can touch a reader's imagination, life, and
heart. A wide range of examples from various genres will be used to
illustrate the discussion and a reading list as well as generous
handouts will be supplied.
Topics covered include:
- What makes a novel, memoir or nonfiction book matter to readers
- How to make meaningful statements that make peoples' lives better without preaching and sentimentality
- How to identify your audience
- How to choose your format - inspiration, fiction, memoir, or how-to
- How to focus on the central theme, question, or issue
- How to hone your writing voice "the music of what you mean in the world"
- How to break down a project into doable segments
- How themes are handled in fiction
- How narrative is used in all forms of writing
Spiritual Writing - Courage for the Journey
Instructor: Gail Balden is
a writer, educator and workshop presenter with over 30 years of
teaching experience. Her work has been published in anthologies,
literary journals and national magazines. She writes a monthly column

Description: What do you have
to say? Listen to your heart and hear the stories and poems within.
Drop fear, take risks, and begin to tell the tale. Whether you journal,
write nonfiction, fiction, or poetry, this class will help you to dig
deeper and write more vividly. Participants should bring a journal or
notebook and their favorite pen. You have the option of bringing a bag
lunch or going out for lunch.
Open Labyrinth Walk
The labyrinth is an ancient archetype of sacred geometry used in many
spiritual traditions and has been recently re-discovered as a tool for
centering, healing, and becoming aware of the divine presence in all of
life. Karin Temple will bring her canvas labyrinth to the Center for
Contemplative Arts for an open walk in an atmosphere of peace and
silence. Finger labyrinths will also be available for your use.
When: Saturday, April 12, come anytime between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
